DIY Natural Home Cleaners

When we hear about dangerous, life-threatening viruses on the news and social media, the first thing we want to do is stock up on essentials and gather research to help avoid catching them. With the Coronavirus, the first things to go out of stock were hand sanitizers and hand soaps.  We want to make sure our homes are safe and clean during these outbreaks. Below I have some tips and recipes for natural cleaning substitutes in keeping your home naturally clean and it’s also very budget-friendly! If you have any essential oils in your home this is the time to do some inventory!

Six DIY Natural Home Cleaners

Pine Disinfectant

2 Cups Water
2 Teaspoons of Borax
8 Drops of Pine Essential Oil
4 Drops of Cedar Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle (keep the bottle away from small children). Shake before each use. Spray on surface areas and wipe clean with a damp cloth.
(Pine is antibiotic and antibacterial)

Toilet Cleaner

2 Cups Water
1/4 cup Liquid Castile Soap
1 Tablespoon Tea Tree Essential Oil
10 Drops Eucalyptus or Peppermint Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle and shake well. Use on toilet surface (under and behind the seat) and wipe clean with a damp cloth. 
(Tea tree is an antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial)
(Eucalyptus is an antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial)

Fruity Scented Wipes

10 Drops Lemon Essential Oil
4 Drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract
6 Drops of Lime Essential Oil
2 Drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil
10 squares cut from cellulose sponge cloth or cotton t-shirts, 5×8 inches each

  1. Fold Each square of cloth and place it in a plastic zipper bag or plastic container with an airtight lid. Add enough water to saturate the cloth, but do not cover them. 
  2. Press down on the cloths with one hand and drain excess water into a cup. Add the remaining ingredients to the water and stir. Pour this mixture over the cloths once more and seal the container.

(Lemon is an antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial)
(Tea tree is an antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial) 

All-Purpose Cleaning Wipes

1 Cup Water
1 Cup Vinegar
15 Drops of Basil Essential Oil
Cotton or Microfiber cloth

Cut the cloth into small squares and stack them on top of each other (about 10) pour water, vinegar, and basil oil into a heavy-duty plastic bag with a zipper closure. Close the bag and squeeze the bag to blend all the ingredients. Place your stacked clothes squares into the bag and close the bag again, pressing down to squeeze out air. 

Dust & Germ Buster

2 Cups Water
1 Cup Vinegar
1 Teaspoon Grapefruit Seed Extract
10 Drops of Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle (keep the bottle away from small children). Shake before each use. Spray on surface areas and wipe clean with a damp cloth. 

Phone Cleaner

2 Tablespoons water
2 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil
2 Drops of Tea Tree Oil.

Blend ingredients in a bowl or cup. Moisten a soft cloth and a clean phone. Dry with a dry cloth. 

When working with oils keep in mind oils can irritate the skin if highly concentrated. Always practice caution when handling. Never allow children to handle pure oils. Wearing gloves is highly recommended.
