MY THOUGHTS

The Heart of Splendid Lake is written by award-winning author Amy Clipston, well-known for her incredible Amish-style novels. The Heart of Splendid Lake is not one of her traditional Amish stories but takes a new and different route. The Heart of Splendid Lake is Amy Clipston’s first published contemporary romance novel. The story takes place on a lake in North Carolina, Splendid Lake. As someone who enjoys visiting bookstores and coffee, I was immediately drawn into the first chapter as Amy introduces the main character, Brianna. Brianna is in a bookstore when she bumps into a man she has never seen in the small town. Who is this man, and what is he doing at Splendid Lake? While Brianna is grabbing a coffee from the Coffee Bean coffee shop for herself, her mother, and her father, she receives a heart-shattering phone call from her mother.

The story becomes gripping as we see Brianna overcome many challenges. At this point, I could not put down this book, wanting to know how these challenges unfold throughout the story. Amy does an incredible job plotting out the details in this book, which makes it such a nail-biter. I ended up staying awake way past my bedtime as I kept telling myself just one more chapter as I wanted to know how Brianna would get through one hurdle after another. Without revealing any spoilers, yes, this book is a romance. However, this book is a respectable romance without any sexual content compared to other novels labeled as romantic. The story is written with such photographic detail you can envision the lake and all its splendor. There was one part of the story that truly captured the pull of attraction between Brianna and Scott. Amy describes this part of the story with such a sweet thoroughness I felt like I was standing right there. A well-written novel will do just that, take you right into the story.

The little moments shared between Scott and Brianna continue to grow throughout the story, but many wedges need to be resolved. The dilemma is, how will they become resolved, and what does that mean for the future of Splendid Lake? After all, the lake is more than just a lake for Brianna, her mom, and sisters Jenna and Cassie.
