The Epic Gardening Seed Starting cells are not like the cells you see sold at most gardening supply stores. Most cells that are sold are flimsy and end up cracking after one to two years of use. The Epic Gardening Seed Starting Trays are (for intended and practical use purposes) nearly unbreakable. I decided to put them to the test and so did my little cuddle bug, Boots.

A store-bought two-year used seed starting cell.

Each cell includes an air-pruning slide slot (which you will not see in other cells sold at the store). This will help your seedlings from becoming root-bound and encourage better growth.

The 6-cells are designed to fit in a 1020 nursery tray if you did not purchase the dome and tray kit. To encourage high humidity to kick-start seedlings one can take a piece of plastic (Saran wrap or press-in-seal) and drape over the top until seedlings form.

Each cell is designed with a gardener in mind. The bottom of each cell has a finger-sized hole to make removing your seedling once it is ready to be transplanted less of a hassle than having to reach for a tool or knife/fork to remove the seedling just pop it out with your finger. This makes this process so much easier.

If using Epic Gardening’s dome and tray they fit perfectly over the 6-cells. These domes and trays are worth their weight in gold. These domes and trays are not just flimsy plastic, they are made with thicker PVC plastic. This means whether used in a heated or unheated greenhouse, these cells can withstand high temperatures and be exposed to sunlight without cracking and will last quite a while compared to the plastic covers sold in most cell kits.

To speed up germination these domes along with an Epic Gardening heat mat can help to increase the temperature at the base of the tray and increase humidity. For slower germination, these cells and domes will also be fantastic to use in an unheated greenhouse. Each dome is designed to create the perfect microclimate for your seedling. The trays allow for bottom-watering without the mess.

These cells are fantastic for your plants that need root space such as tomatoes and cucumbers. It is a little earlier in the season so I am going to plant Lavender from Botanical Interest in the video below.
